The arrival of the half-year slowly melts me until I am nought but a puddle of stewing ideas. The cooler moments– on an evening as the sun sets, in a cafe, hiar frazzled by air conditioning, on a bench in the pub sticing to the leather booth that’s buried beneath the tram tracks– I can find reprieve and with it, a moment of lucidity.
Reading Goals
In astounding news, I have completed my yearly reading goal seven months early. So far, I have read thirteen books this year, and have planned out the most pressing books on my To Be Read (TBR). My top five being The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway, The Discomfort of Evening by Marie Lukas Rijneveld, The Pages by Hugo Hamilton, I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins.
Of course, there are many other titles I am looking forward to reading, though having a smaller list of 5 is much less overwhelming than a list of the 100+ titles waiting on my shelf.
YouTube
Though it’s taken a nosedive since the weather heated up, I still have plans for my YouTube channel to continue through the year. The heat, causing my office reaching upwards of thirty degrees centigrade, makes the editing process arduous and physically difficult which proves a challenge to produce quality content regularly. So, in short, I’m not.
As for what I’m reading, I have hopes to read a very many of my books, and wish to partake in the EllenMadeBookClub picks for July and August. Orwell’s 1984 and Miller’s Song of Achilles are both contenders for the Book Club, though the leading titles, A Man Called Ove by Backman and Pachinko by Jin Lee have been on my periphery and are both titles I’m interested in reading.
Creative Bastards 2
After a year of gruelling work, I finally finished CBM2! For many reasons, Issue 2 will be the last installment of the magazine for a while. Though I am thankful for the help I received in editing written pieces, it was tough to organise the other aspects of the publication, such as social media, outreach, communication, layout, formatting, printing, and fulfilment. To put it simply, another issue isn’t feasible to complete mostly independently in a succinct timeframe.
Though I’d love to continue the project further, it will likely be some time before you see the familiar CBM back in action.
Due to dramatic changes in cost, the CBM website is no longer avaliable, however you can access the first and second issues here and via the links on my digital portfolio.
Writing and Work
One of my goals for this year was to apply to an internship or apprenticeship. So far, I have applied for Penguin Random House’s two week Work Experience program. Though I wasn’t accepted this time, I plan to apply again when they next open. The selection process is completely randomised, so there is little I can do to increase my chances.
In the meantime, I plan to independently research my questions about the industry, and may share my findings here at a later date.
